The National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) is set to collaborate with the Beekeeping Extension Association of Nigeria (BEAN) to secure funding from the Standards Trade Development Facility (STDF) to enhance beekeeping activities in Nigeria.
A delegation from the Beekeeping Extension Association, led by its Chairman, Alhaji Idris M.B. Zaria, visited NAERLS on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, where they were received by the Executive Director of NAERLS, Prof. Y.A. Sani, and other key management staff.
In his remarks, Prof. Sani welcomed the delegation and apologized for the delay in holding the meeting, which was initially scheduled for December 2024. He provided an overview of NAERLS’ role in promoting beekeeping and emphasized the institute’s commitment to disseminating innovative beekeeping technologies to improve farmers’ livelihoods. The Executive Director called on the Association to assist NAERLS in securing grants to expand the institute’s beehive business and support farmers interested in beekeeping.
In response, Alhaji Idris M.B. Zaria expressed appreciation for the partnership and provided insight into the association’s history, stating that BEAN was established in 2002 to fill the gap in organized beekeeping extension services in Nigeria. He outlined two key objectives of the visit:
- To strengthen ties with NAERLS and explore avenues for collaboration.
- To develop a proposal for a $500,000 grant, which could later be expanded to $1 million through a bilateral funding agreement.
He further highlighted the global issue of beehive disappearance, urging NAERLS to take proactive steps in research and technology development to mitigate future challenges in the sector. Additionally, Alhaji Idris requested NAERLS to assign its staff who would work closely with the Association in securing grants from various donor agencies.
As part of their commitment to promoting beekeeping, BEAN pledged to provide free training to youths—both online and physically— on modern beekeeping practices. Upon completion of the training, the association, in collaboration with NAERLS, would seek funding to equip participants with essential beekeeping tools and materials.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Sani expressed appreciation to the delegation and reaffirmed NAERLS’ commitment to supporting the initiative. To facilitate the grant acquisition process, a technical committee was set up, headed by the Assistant Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, Prof. Tunji Iyiola. The committee is to work closely with BEAN to develop a strong funding proposal.
This partnership marks a significant step towards strengthening the beekeeping industry, empowering farmers, and ensuring sustainable honey production in the country.
