Agricultural Economics
The Agricultural Economics Department (AED) is one of the seven core departments of NAERLS. Its current staffing includes Six Professors, Four PhDs and Twelve M.Scs with specializations in agricultural economics.
The primary mandates of the Agricultural Economics Department are the conduct of economic research, training, outreach, and other related activities
Over the years, the Department’s research thrusts have concentrated in areas of:
- Training
- Research and Knowledge Creation
- Research tools development and approaches relevant to the various agricultural sub-sectors in Nigeria
- Studies on social and economic impact of adoption of agricultural innovations in Nigeria
- Capacity building and empowerment for various target groups in the Nigerian agricultural value chain
- Cost-effectiveness and sustainability issues in the agricultural extension service delivery system in Nigeria, and
- The Nigeria Annual Agricultural Performance Assessment (APS).
- Developing students' analytical and critical thinking skills
- Fostering quantitative and research skills: which involves using statistical methods to analyze economic data.
- Promoting economic literacy: The department plays a role in fostering a broader understanding of economic principles
- Participation in original research that contributes to the advancement of economic knowledge. This research can be theoretical, applied, or policy-oriented.
- Disseminating research outcomes through peer-reviewed academic journals, books, and working papers to contribute to the global body of economic knowledge.
- Actively seeking external funding to support research projects and enhance the department's research capacity.
- Using research findings to inform public discourse and provide evidence-based recommendations to policymakers.
- Participating in university governance through participation in committees, academic senates, and other administrative roles.
- Organizing seminars, workshops, and public lectures to disseminate economic knowledge and engage with local economic issues.
- Offering economic expertise to local businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.
- Participating in projects and collaborations aimed at promoting economic growth and social welfare in the region and beyond
periodic meetings of technical committees and preparation of annual estimates for approved plans. The Department has (either solely or jointly) designed and implemented several projects having agricultural economics components in different parts of Nigeria.such includes
- Skills acquisition and entrepreneurship
- Data record and documentation unit
- Monitoring and Evaluation
- Students under industrial training
Its staff has published numerous radio & TV programmes, handbills, handbooks and manuals on various topics in agricultural economics, farm management and agri-business, mainly targeted at farmers and agricultural extension agents; many of which are available online on the institute’s website.
