Agriculture remains one of the strongest pillars of Nigeria’s economy, employing about 34.31% of the national workforce, over 35 million people whose livelihoods depend on farming, processing, and related value chains. Yet, despite its size and importance, the sector continues to face a troubling challenge: declining youth participation. Nigeria is losing an estimated ₦60 trillion annually because young people are not actively engaged in agricultural production or agribusiness opportunities.

The numbers tell a clear story. Only 9.7% of rural youth are directly involved in agricultural production. Even though more than half of young people say they have an interest in agribusiness, most are driven into the sector not by passion or exposure, but by unemployment and the lack of alternatives. This means that Nigeria is missing out on the creativity, energy, and innovation that young people bring. At a time when agri-tech is reshaping farming around the world, our own agricultural system risks falling behind if the next generation is not positioned to lead.

This is where AGTiVΞx comes in.

AGTiVΞx, an initiative of the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS) in partnership with CONESAM Nigeria, is designed to change the story of youth in agriculture. The platform creates a space where farmers, researchers, innovators, and young people can connect, collaborate, and exchange knowledge. It promotes smart agriculture, digital tools, and modern production techniques that make farming more efficient, more profitable, and more attractive to young Nigerians.

AGTiVΞx is not just another project; it is a movement. It encourages youth to see agriculture as a field full of opportunities, from precision farming and drone services to digital marketplaces, data management, mechanization services, and climate-smart innovations. It opens the door for Nigerian youth to participate meaningfully in a sector that will continue to define the country’s economic future.
